Said Elnashaie's punditry

If you want to review in detail about Said Elnashaie, you can read these posts:

Briefly, he is El Naschie's next-youngest brother, the family black sheep, and an El-Ghad party activist and political opponent of the Mubaraks, who El Naschie favors. His pet peeves are known to include The Great Satan, Imperialist filth, and Zionist tools.

Iran's Ahmedinejad is wrapping up a visit to Lebanon, and this is the occasion for Said's latest communiqué, reproduced below, in full, with small corrections and formatting improvements.

Dear Prof. Sharaf,

This is excellent and this is very true, Lebanon (the resistant part) are clean honest Arab progressive nationalist fighting against the criminal Imperialism and Zionism and their allies; this part is getting bigger and stronger; while the other shrinking disgusting part are Zionists wearing Arab false faces. In Egypt the ruling class are Zionists and they will loose because they have chosen the wrong filthy wagon which will take them straight to hell, even their Zionist and Imperialist lovers will not help them if they are still alive, as what happened in Vietnam to the traitors in the south.

What is strange nowadays is that some progressive nationalist honest Egyptians are picking what seems to be a very old video (if it is true); it is about 40 years old at the very beginning of Hezbollah and they focus on Nassr Allah talking about being part of Iran, and then they ask us, us who support the resistance in Lebanon lead by the great Hezbollah, what do we think of that; and I would like to give those colleagues an answer, but after I ask them questions:

  • 1- Why did you find this now and not 40 years ago when it happened (if it is true)?

  • 2- Do they know that USA admitted that only last year they spent $500 millions to harm the image of Hezbollah?

  • 3- Can they estimate how much the Zionists spent for the same aim? And how much the Zionist Arabs spent?

  • 4- Did they count how many filthy Zionist spies have been caught in Lebanon during the last few month? can they estimate home many USA and Arab spies are their?

  • 5- Can they give us their estimate of the filth done by the International court for El-harriri the father, first against Syria and now against Hezbollah? and whether it is an International court or a Zionist one? and how they cover for the false witnesses and how El-harriri the son is acting in a very suspicious way and now he apologized to Syria, but not to the extent of supporting trial for the false witnesses and who is behind them, because may be he is among the ones behind them!!

  • 6- Did any of you showed us what do you think about the wrongly called international organizations (UN, Security Council, atomic Energy Commission, etc.) and how they are not international tools but Imperialist, Zionist tools, used to cover all the crimes committed by Imperialists and Zionists and now very vulgarly used against Iran.

These are some simple questions they should think about before they are used to support spies and USA and Zionist and Zionist Arabs against the Lebanese resistance and Hezbollah.

Now back to their question, we do not know the answer to this question, they should ask Hassan Nassrallah what did he mean by that 40 years ago (if it is true) and what does he think now and in all cases any degree of alliance with Iran which is strongly against Imperialism and Zionism is much better than the Arab Zionists rulers who are in alliance with Zionism and Imperialism.

I hope this is clear to our dear progressive and nationalist colleagues,

Best Wishes,
Said Salah Eldin Elnashaie

The youngest brother, Amr S. Elnashai or "Scorpion300", says Said is mentally ill. I don't know if that's true, but he does seem pretty angry. Here is an old website of Said's, last updated September 1, 2000. Notice the lime-green background and 36-point type.

El Naschie reviews a Tomasz Kapitaniak book

There is good news and bad news for Prof. Kapitaniak.

The good news is that El Naschie liked the book.

The bad news is that El Naschie liked the book.

Chaos for Engineers

From a review of the first edition by Prof. [sic. not really] El Naschie, University of Cambridge [sic. not really]:

Small is beautiful and not only that, it is comprehensive as well. These are the spontaneous thoughts which came to my mind after browsing in this latest book by Prof. Thomas Kapitaniak, probably one of the most outstanding scientists working on engineering applications of Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos today. A more careful reading reinforced this first impression....The presentation is lucid and user friendly with theory, examples, and exercises.

Goodhart's law, Campbell's law, Lucas critique

From blogger Abi of Nanopolitan I learn of named principles that are pertinent to the problem of citation scamming and what to do about it.

In some banter in the M.S. El Naschie and Ji-Huan He catch more flak comments, Hossam and I talked about what should be done to foil those like He and El Naschie who game the system. Should university ranking systems be adjusted to compensate? Should offenders be publicly humiliated? Etc.

Here are the three principles:

Once a social or economic indicator or other surrogate measure is made a target for the purpose of conducting social or economic policy, then it will lose the information content that would qualify it to play such a role.

The more any quantitative social indicator is used for social decision-making, the more subject it will be to corruption pressures and the more apt it will be to distort and corrupt the social processes it is intended to monitor.

Given that the structure of an econometric model consists of optimal decision rules of economic agents, and that optimal decision rules vary systematically with changes in the structure of series relevant to the decision maker, it follows that any change in policy will systematically alter the structure of econometric models.

They do not give much hope that twiddling the parameters in university ratings and citation systems will thwart the Naschies and Hes of the world.

Martin Bojowald's Big Bounce

This October 2008 SCIAM article contains several comments we should preserve.

The ones about El Naschie are shown below. They are reminiscent of the famous wall-of-text "E-infinity communications" from FQXi-395 and welle::erd.ferkel, but pre-date those by at least eight months. They also predate the era in which El Naschie Watch began taking the great man's sockpuppets to task over their pathological inability to use correct punctuation, particularly apostrophes, after which they greatly cleaned up their act.

The proof of the sockpuppet equation

Jazz = Dunham

is left as an exercise for the reader.

Regarding the comments of Dr. Wagnert, I am inclined to agree that the idea of periodic big bang and big crush giving birth to a big bounce is a relatively old one. What is important however is the mathematics and as in most articles written for the wider public, there is no mathematics in Scientific American publications. Never the less the idea of space atoms, unlike what Dr. Wagnert implies, is not new either. As I understood from the article of Dr. Ambjorn and Dr. Loll from University of Utrecht, the atoms of space and time are very special kind of atoms which are called in mathematical jargon, fractal or Cantor sets. Again, from what I have read on the other site of Scientific American, the idea of modeling spacetime using these Cantor sets atoms goes back to an Egyptian scientist Mohamed El Naschie. I heard about him only recently but it would be interesting to see if his theory would support the work of Dr. Martin Bojowald. It seems a great deal of waste to create whole universes only to destroy them again. If nature behaved in this way then it is working according to the principle of maximum inefficiency. In such a universe Kant should have renamed his monumental work Critique of Pure Nonsense rather than Critique of Pure Reason. But who ever said that our universe is governed by reason. If you are in any about that just have a good look at every Head of State on this planet.

I must admit that I have also never heard anybody seriously claiming that Einstein discovered the atom. The atom of light, that is to say the photon, was discovered by Einstein. We have really to say rediscovered. Photon or the quanta of light was postulated long ago by Newton. However when the wave nature of light was discovered, Newton s theory of light particles was discredited. Only later with the advent of quantum mechanics did we get what is known as the wave particle duality. This is however not only characteristic of light but of all quantum particles. The entire story is well documented experimentally in the two-slit experiment with quantum particles. The resolution of this paradox constitutes part of the work of the Egyptian Mohamed El Naschie whose name was mentioned earlier on here on this site. As I understand it El Naschie was able to resolve this problem because as correctly mentioned earlier on also on this site, he discovered the atoms not of matter but of spacetime. These atoms are something considered by physicists to be esoteric mathematics. This mathematic is Cantor sets. A Cantor set normally has a dimension called Hausdorff dimension but it does not have a measure. This means it does not have a length or a volume. This seems to be crazy physically speaking but mathematically it makes a great deal of sense. And strange enough more often than not, what ever makes a great deal of mathematical sense turns out at the end to make a great deal of physical sense.

I was elated today to hear that Nambu, Kobayashi and Maskawa got the Nobel prize in physics for 2008. Particularly Nambu got his Nobel prize for a mathematical idea, namely symmetry breaking. Some may think that this is only mathematics but symmetry is an all embracing principle. Some may have found it also esoteric that the dimension of the exceptional Lie group E8E8 is equal to the number of massless gauge bosons in super string theory. How could we equate symmetry with particles? I do not think this is difficult after general relativity where Einstein equated matter with geometry. I think in time the unification monopole of tHooft, the E8 symmetry group of Green and Schwarz and Mohamed El Naschie s Cantor sets atoms of spacetime will prove to be indispensable physical concepts although originating in mathematics. As a mathematician I can only congratulate the Nobel Committee on their choice for the 2008 Nobel prize in physics.

33. Dubois in reply to Frank in Illinois 03:10 PM 10/8/08

I am only a mathematician but I could answer Frank s question. It was Kurt Gdel who found a solution for Einstein s equation of general relativity in which there are closed time-like curves. If a time-like curve is closed that would mean that you could travel back in time. Gdel is known for his work in logic. He is probably the most famous logician and mathematician of the last century. Many people do not know that Gdel was actually a physicist. That is probably why he became a close friend of Einstein when they met again in Princeton. Gdel is Austrian so they spoke together in German. Gdel gave this paper as a present for Einstein s birthday. I read a paper by Mohamed El Naschie about Gdel s theorem and chaos theory. It was published some eight years ago in the Journal of the Franklin Inst. in the USA. I also read later on another paper by the same Author published in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals about the connection between Gdel s theory of gravity and high energy particle physics. Now if you can control time then in a sense you can control gravity. This is born by the so called Feynman-El Naschie conjecture. It says that gravity may be equated to fractal time. That is to say the origin of gravity is in the fractal flow of time. El Naschie was inspired by the work of Feynman on the subject. Feynman said that there are similarities between van der Walles forces and gravity. These forces are due to unbalance in the equilibrium between the different molecules creating fluctuation which is perceived as a force. El Naschie reasoned that the fluctuation of fractal time has a similar effect producing gravity or more correctly, producing quantum gravity which manifests itself later on as classical gravity. I cannot remember where I read all that. It may well be on Elsevier s Science Direct.

As for the supernova (ABK007 comment), this is a huge explosion but in a black hole not even light could escape so I am not sure what ABK007 means. Of course, as I said, I am a mathematician and the sequence to a black hole starts from red giants to a white dwarf which cools down and starts gravitational collapse into a black hole from which even light cannot escape, as I said earlier. I hope this is helpful.

Prof. Khory asked me to convey these comments to Scientific American:

My comments center around a single point. It is the case that either Ambjorn, Loll and Jurkiewicz work is another formulation of Mohamed El Naschie s theory using computer simulation then they should have mentioned him and said so or it is a completely new theory reaching the same conclusion as El Naschie and then they should also have said so.

In a nutshell, and avoiding too much technical jargon the relationship between the two theories are as follows. Repeating any process again and again to come near to an end state is called iteration. Constructing a Cantor set by deleting the middle third of a line segment again and again is also an iteration. The amusing fact is that you could iterate anything and end with a Cantor set. You could iterate snakes or frogs and the limit set would be a Cantor set. El Naschie used a beautiful trick. He started from the end, namely the Cantor limit set. That way he could ignore all the highly complicated nonlinear equations leading to this set. In the language of nonlinear dynamics, he started from a universality akin to that of Mitchell Feigenbaum. I suspect El Naschie learned this trick from the well known Russian/French topologist Alexei Sossinksy who published the idea in a 1999 book Editions du Seuil-Paris, France. In fact El Naschie used the same illustration of Sossinksy in his 2002 paper Quantum loops and fat Cantor sets in transfinite high energy physics which can be found on Elsevier s Science Direct. He combined it with Feigenbaum s period doubling and modified it to knots doubling ramifying at a Cantor set in his Fig. 7 of his highly cited paper Elementary prerequisites for E-infinity (Recommended background readings in nonlinear dynamics, geometry and topology), 2006 again on Elsevier s Science Direct. Then came a crucial point for the connection with the old work of Ambjorn on triangulation and Regge calculus. In his paper VAK, vacuum fluctuation and the mass spectrum of high energy particle physics, 2003 Science Direct, El Naschie gives the connection to the Klein modular curve triangular tiling. In Fig. 2 of this paper he considered both the approximate solution using Klein s original curve and the exact transfinite solution using Klein s compactified curve. Here comes the connection to Ambjorn s work who at that time was not working with Renate Loll who was busy with loop quantum gravity and super strings. Ambjorn starts from an approximate solution corresponding to the non-compactified Klein original curve. Subsequently he feeds his approximately correct equation and his approximately correct geometry into a highly efficient computer. In a sense, and loosely speaking, the computer iterates the equation, at just the geometry and fractalises it until it converges slowly but surely to the exact solution of El Naschie. This effect was illustrated by many calculations many years ago by El Naschie to show that his result and the old classical Ambjorn result are related. As I have already said at that time Ambjorn did not make any reference to fractal spacetime or modeling spacetime using Cantor sets. In fact I know of many papers in which El Naschie refers to Ambjorn s work on triangulation and indirectly drawing his attention to the fact that this is essentially a computerized fractal spacetime theory. I was only many years later that Ambjorn teamed up with R. Loll and Jurkiewicz and worked together in Utrecht, a well known Centre of Excellence. To our knowledge however only their Scientific American article was formulated in the language of El Naschie s Cantor sets and Nottale and Ord s fractal spacetime. By contrast the mathematics, or more accurately, the computer simulation remains the same. Of course they employed now a far more efficient modern computing but the procedure is essentially the same if we disregard their arguments about causality and the arrow of time. Many have commented about salient aspects of this work. However nothing is more surprising and revealing as a recent paper of Prof. L. Marek-Crnjac A Feynman path integral-like method for deriving the four dimensionality of spacetime from first principles, 2008 available on Science Direct. Prof. Crnjac derives the exact dimensionality 4.02 using El Naschie s theory without a computer. I was cheered by the fact that a group calling themselves E-infinity fans posed on this site on 11.01/08 at 08.21 p.m. a rather clearly written comment attesting to the same things which I have explained here. The result 4.02 is one of the most remarkable results ever published in theoretical physics for the following reason. Ambjorn used a highly accurate numerical simulation. If 4.02 is the topological dimension of spacetime, he could have increased the accuracy and easily reached 4.0000000. This is so because any deviation from four dimensionality must be enormously small. 0.02 is not a small number compared to four. Consequently this is not a topological dimension. Second this is not the Hausdorff dimension of quantum spacetime. The exact Hausdorff dimension of quantum spacetime was calculated many years ago by Prof. S. Al Athel, the then Minister of Science & Technology of Saudi Arabia as well as Prof. Mohamed El Naschie and many others of their co-workers. Never the less 4.02 is an exact result with a definite meaning consistent with El Naschie s theory and could be obtained only in two ways. Either by a theory which does not have a trace of continuity in it like the Cantorian theory of El Naschie or alternatively by a superbly refined computer simulation such as that published in Scientific American by Ambjorn and his co-workers. In a sense my nutshell has exploded beyond the nut and became almost a short article but my hope is that I could contribute constructively to this controversy.

Andrei Khory

65. Noyes 11:11 AM 11/7/08

Without disagreeing with Andrei Khory on any point of his admirable explanation of El Naschie s work, I would just like to fill in some details and expand some points. First J. Ambjorn wrote two books as long ago as 1977 Quantum Geometry, published by Cambridge Press and the second one The geometry of dynamical triangulation, published by Springer. The Scientific American paper is mainly a polishing of what is in these two books couched in the fractal spacetime and Cantor sets general philosophy and terminology of Mohamed El Naschie, Garnet Ord and Laurent Nottale. For instance the inequality given in the Springer book on page 53 and denoted equation 3.35 could be made to an equality leading to El Naschie s Hausdorff dimension 4.2360679. The very same result is found using the non-commutative geometry of French Field Medalist Alan Connes. On page 506 of Connes book Non-commutative geometry, published by Academic Press in 1990, he gave at the bottom of the page an equation for a dimension in terms of a Lambda naught. Setting the Lambda equal the Hausdorff dimension of a random triadic Cantor set one finds the Hausdorff dimension 4.236067977. This all confirms El Naschie s view point that 4.02 is neither the topological nor the ordinary Hausdorff dimension of fractal spacetime.

I apologize for the length of my comments in such an historic week. In his Editorial El Naschie said that America has elected science and scientific thinking when they elected Barak Obama as their President.

Equivocal quote from the first Arnold paper

P. Balaram. Citations, Impact Indices and the Fabric of Science. Current Science, Vol. 99, No. 7, 10 October 2010 (PDF).

Here is the only interesting part:

In a commentary on the ‘state of scholarly publishing’, Douglas Arnold, president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics draws a damaging conclusion: ‘. . . common bibliometrics – such as the impact factor for journals and citation counts for authors – are easily manipulated’ (Siam News, 2009, 42, 1). He argues that ‘their use in ranking and judging should be curtailed’. Arnold’s concerns are based on cases of both editor and journal misconduct. He cites the case of the journals Chaos, Solitons and Fractals (Elsevier) and International Journal of Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation (Freund Publishing), in which the editors [note M.S. El Naschie and Ji-Huan He are unnamed] ‘publish copiously, not only in their own journals but also in each other’s, and they cite each other frequently’.

It is a shame that Arnold's latest paper is not mentioned; perhaps it appeared too late. But Balaram should have named the citation scammers as Arnold did. I am getting sick and tired of craven, gutless reporting that fails to name them.

Other gutless wonders:

Our latest El Naschie Watch archive

I wasn't expecting this, but the Comments on Phil Baty's THE article have suddenly become so awsome that they merit a position in the Catalog of El Naschie Watch Archives. Not only are the comments of high quality, but they are full of fury and passion. Several comments attack El Naschie, Alexandria University, and King Saud University. An E-infinity group member has shown up to tout the great man's E-infinity theory, and to defend Alexandria University.

Publications like Times Higher Education are rather stodgy and cautious, and I fear some comments may be deleted by the webmaster, so into our archives they go for safe-keeping.

Rössler rodeo roundup

Thanks to the indispensable reader who provided these links.

Jürgen K. and FrznHrs tried to reason with Prof. Rössler, but to little avail. Here's Rössler's reply.

Lieber Herr Kollege J.K.:

Dear Colleague J.K.:

Your colleague F.H. has not refuted anything. Unless his lawyer J.K. can specify what he has refuted, since he himself can not.

I have described how the views of Mr FH leads to a violation of energy conservation.

Now he is silent. And you are too.

I'm waiting for a rebuttal.

Cordially yours, Otto E. Rössler

Dear Mr. F.H.:
I admire you that you came back.

Unfortunately you repeat your old scholastic assertions without being able to disprove my theorem. I repeat: "Equal rest mass energy content downstairs as compared to upstairs implies energy nonconservation".

How about giving it a try?

The machine is running at an exponential pace! You are the only person on the planet who tries to refute the danger. So I do not underestimate you at all. But everybody sees that you are unable to disprove my theorem. So far.

I give you another day.

Take care, Otto.

  • 7 October, 2010. Rössler returns to his thought experiment in the form of a story about Einstein and Telemachus.

Original German: Telemach gegen Heuer: Kann der globale Selbstmordversuch des Oktober 2010 noch aufgehalten werden?

Google's English translation: Telemachus against Heuer: Can the global suicide attempt in October 2010 still be prevented?

  • 8 October, 2010. Rössler estimates that a mini black hole would take five years to swallow the Earth. Original German or Google's English. The Achtphasen commenters take him seriously.

  • 7 October, 2010. Having saved the best for last, we come to RelativKritisch, where blogger "Redaktion" lives up to his high standards.

Original German: Otto E. Rössler – Ich will nicht widerlegt werden!

Google's English translation: Otto E. Rössler - I will not be refuted!

Redaktion pours scorn on Rössler's so-called "ℜ-Theorem".

There are two dozen reader comments, and a photoshop of Rössler on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

UPDATE. More Rössler bronco busting from the Achtphasen site.

Today I could prove to a colleague that a minor implication of general relativity, overlooked for 95 years, is for real. The whole world could follow our open dispute.

A finite spherical surface surrounding a black hole holds an infinite volume of space, in which c is constant globally and in which Telemach holds: T (time), L (length), M (mass) and Ch (charge) change concomitantly in proportion to gravitational redshift.

This result totally changes the properties of black holes. Black holes are hoped to be produced these days in an unprecedented experiment at CERN.

Even if there were no evidence that these changed properties make them dangerous, the experiment which is based on the assumption that they are innocuous would have to be stopped until the issue is clarified.

So I cordially ask Mr. Heuer to give the stop signal tonight until clarity has been achieved.

I think every person on the planet who cares about rationality agrees.

  • 10 October, 2010. This Achtphasen post from Marc Fasnacht has five comments including three from Rössler.

Google's English translation: 'FH' keeps Mr. Rössler "ℜ theorem" by Mr. Giulini and Nicolai contradicted for the Lord (and thus not a theorem in the strict sense) and has actually nothing to add substance to the arguments.

In a comment, Marc Fasnacht says "All we are is dust in the wind... Cantor's dust" suggesting he's a drinker of El Naschie's E-infinity Kool-Aid.

In one of his comments, Rössler suggests getting ex-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan involved somehow. (Last time he suggested Nelson Mandela.)

  • 10 October, 2010. Rössler writes to Governor Stefan Mappus of Baden-Württemberg. Original German or Google's English translation.

Rössler announces his intention of meeting with Governor Mappus on Wednesday at 3:00 PM. He laments that the Pope won't meet with him, and compares himself to a holocaust victim.

  • 11 October 2010. On Achtphasen again, Rössler answers at length a question from Ralf Kannenberg concerning the anticipated LHC-induced end of the world.

Original German: Antwort an Herrn Kannenberg

Google's English translation: Answer to Mr. Kannenberg

TL;DR? You decide. Anyway, he winds up by saying he emulates Richard Feynman's utter scientific honesty, which is amusing.

Marc Fasnacht worriedly asks in a comment whether any black holes have been detected yet.

Half-breed!

After a five month nap, this thread has awoken.

This is the latest, with some links added to explain who Rivalls is talking about:

#23 - Rivalls 2010-10-09 21:19 - (Reply)
Even a toddler sucking on his thumb would immediately realize that Martin Klicken is a sock puppet or pseudo name for Christoph Drosser, a mediocre journalist of Die Zeit which is a German newspaper produced in the red light district of Hamburg, although it was once upon a time a respectable newspaper, that is before the likes of Mr. Drosser took over. Drosser is a colleague Quirin Schiermeier, the embattled journalist of Nature. The whole thing started with this half breed mathematical physicist John Baez from Riverside California who is now roaming the mountains in Asia searching for a job [Baez is spending a year in Singapore]. John Baez hired the lot to help Dr. Renate Loll from Utrecht. Drosser made the foolish step of hiring a mad man Jason who is becoming an embarrassment and liability [:( ] to all the conspirators. Do not underestimate the internet and how much harm it can do to innocent people. Do not over estimate it either because ultimately the internet will reveal the truth. Mr. Martin Klicken Drosser BaezLoll you are disgusting.

John Baez is of Jewish and Hispanic background, and this is what the sock puppet "Rivalls" means by calling him a "half-breed". He calls me an embarrassment and liability? By the way, Rivalls is the same sock puppet who left this long comment under the name Jeremy Keyes (November 12, 2008 1:26 PM) on the Baez archive. Note the long-standing preoccupation with Baez's ethnicity.

Half-Breed by Cher - Lyrics:

My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me
The indians said I was white by law
The White Man always called me "Indian Squaw"

CHORUS:
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, she's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

We never settled, went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
"Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee"

Repeat chorus

We weren't accepted and I felt ashamed
Nineteen I left them, tell me who's to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But I can't run away from what I am

Repeat chorus

Comments on Phil Baty's THE article

This is about New weights and measures throw up a few surprises, 16 September 2010, in Times Higher Education.

Here's all you need to read from the article itself:

The new methodology used to compile the 2010-11 Times Higher Education World University Rankings is more reliant on evidence and less on reputation [give me a break, Phil], and has produced a number of eye-catching [odd adjective to choose] results. Here we look at some of the outliers...

Alexandria University is Egypt's only representative in the global top 200, in joint 147th place.

Its position, rubbing shoulders with the world's elite, is down to an exceptional score of 99.8 in the "research-influence" category, which is virtually on a par with Harvard University.

Alexandria, which counts Ahmed H. Zewail, winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, among its alumni, clearly produces some strong research. But it is a cluster of highly cited papers in theoretical physics and mathematics - and more controversially, the high output from one scholar [El Naschie] in one journal [Chaos, Solitons and Fractals]- that gives it such a high score.

Notice that they allude to El Naschie without naming him.

The comments are far better than the article. The most germane parts are in green.

Darryl Youzefowich 16 September, 2010

Summary: Data is skewed by high profile projects in some high spending areas like technology.

Multidiscipline universities that do many things (good all- round schools) take a hit.

Alexandria University with one scholar does not a good university make, sorry to say.

These rankings are going to cause a lot of pain for some. By their own admission, it is probably a transitional set of data. Outlier universities that are good but outside some of the criteria will not do as well. Some egos will be taking a hit, interesting to watch the fireworks from the sidelines.

higherank 16 September, 2010

Not sure what to believe any more. A better all round approach to avoid data being skewed by high profile projects perhaps should focus on "research impact" instead, across all faculties, as the best way forward. Look at the method below ( see link) seems to lend more of a balanced weight and, provide a more meaningful reflection of universities today.

Check out the better attempt here:- http://www.highimpactuniversities.com/fac5.html

Peter Coles 16 September, 2010

Universities do not generate citations. Papers do. In fields such as particle physics and astronomy, papers tend to involve large consortia and have authors lists containing hundreds of names. The sensible thing to do about this is to divide the citations for each paper by the total number of authors and allocate the impact according to the fraction at each university.

This would be fairer, but I think Durham and Sussex would still do very well.

iainmacl 16 September, 2010

Clearly this one scholar in Alexandria needs to be offered a visiting professorship at Warwick.

Philip 16 September, 2010

This ranking illustrates the decline of this newspaper over the years from a top paper into a tabloid. How can Warwick not be in the top 200?

Thom Brooks 16 September, 2010

I'd be interested to know the correlation (if any) between a university's citation scores in the sciences and its position in your ranking.

The fact that Warwick can score so highly in the arts and humanities yet fail to make the top 200 may be evidence that bibliometrics were not normalised enough for non-science subjects.

Kampechara Puriparinya 16 September, 2010

New weights, a lot of global universities are winners and losers.
THES WCU Ranking 2010 changes its indicators, and uses Thomson
Reuters to survey the citations of research performance of universities worldwide. Many universities are missed from the excellent tables of THES-QS 2005-2009. The new THES Ranking enhances competitive advantage of intensive research universities which established in developed countries, and mostly lack behide of developing countries. The rich is more richer of the world class education.

Johanne Provencal 16 September, 2010

I expect that I am not alone in being deeply concerned that close to one third of the weight for the rankings is based on citation measurements from the academic journals indexed by Thomson Reuters' Web of Science' database (which represents only 12,000 journals and clearly makes less visible some disciplines and publications and what is 'produced' by universities). This is hardly the "objective and rigorous" approach that is being claimed by the rankings and it is highly detrimental and reductive.

Tyke 17 September, 2010

I suspect that two things will be happening over the next few days: 1. A number of VCs will be reinterpreting their mission statements. So many VCs declared they would lead their institutions into the top 50 in the world by 2015 now find themselves (with 48 months to go) not even in the top 50 in Europe. It's going to take some skill to convince their staff and students (who are probably not interested anyway) that they are still on course for what was patently (for most) and absurdly grandiose idea.

2. University PR departments (or whatever ridiculous name they go under at the moment) will be coming up with all sorts of reasons to justify their VC's inevitable statements that their position in the tables does not reflect their "true quality".

Jonathan Baldwin 20 September, 2010

"Universities do not generate citations. Papers do."

That's a really interesting comment, worth thinking about more.
So let's imagine that controversial scientist A publishes a paper suggesting that, for example, a new vaccine causes an illness in children. This paper is then cited by 1000 other scientists who take issue with it, 1000 media academics who use it as an example of how "bad science" gets lots of attention, and so on. The university where that academic works rises up the rankings, while the individuals who demonstrate his work is rubbish see no benefit.

Seems like just as football teams need to recruit goal scorers, so do universities. The difference is, in football own goals cancel out goals scored against the opposition. In citation counts, bad research that is cited often seems to score better than good research that is cited rarely.

For once, I think web sites with comment ranking may offer a solution here (though I can't imagine how it would work in practice). On sites like Digg, readers can "vote up" links to other websites that they find interesting or worthy, and "vote down" those that aren't.

Or have I just described peer review? Now I'm confused.

By the way, the citation for this comment is Baldwin (2010) http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=413528

Please give generously.

True, but not important 20 September, 2010

"So let's imagine that controversial scientist A publishes a paper suggesting that, for example, a new vaccine causes an illness in children. This paper is then cited by 1000 other scientists who take issue with it, 1000 media academics who use it as an example of how "bad science" gets lots of attention, and so on."

This is true, insofar as it goes, but the number of papers that are highly cited because they are deeply flawed is tiny, while the embarrassment caused by them is large, and does have real effects. I did a search of the 200 most cited papers in my field, and none of them meets this description - they are all either major conceptual breakthroughs, or cases where someone developed an extremely useful tool or collected an extremely useful dataset. Some may not be entirely correct, but they were major steps forward at the time and where they are wrong, they are wrong in a way that involved reasonable speculation at the time, and prompted genuine additional progress.

There are more serious problems using citations as a metric,. Some pedestrian work in trendy areas can come out rated higher than truly outstanding work in less trendy areas. Papers that shut down a line of research by showing it not to be viable can be extremely important, saving a lot of resources that might have otherwise been wasted - but they generally don't get cited a lot because they shut down that line of research and people move on to other things. Those are the issues to worry about - not the very rare paper that's highly cited for being wrong.

John Erwar 29 September, 2010

It's beyond belief to see Alexandria University ranking at 147 because of a single fake scientist named Mohamed El naschie. I can't wait to witness this exciting theater unfold for the next few weeks when the Times and the world discover the scam executed by Alexandria University. God bless the reputation of the Times!

Alexandria, Egypt ahead of George Town! Wonderful 3 October, 2010

Why is my University "George Town" scoring lower than Egypt's Alexandria University?

And why is THE silent? There is a sensational story, about to break out, and an ongoing investigation lead by CNN AC 360 with its famous motto "Keeping Them Honest" regarding possible fraud committed by Alexandria University in order to spike citations of fake scientific papers published by one its controversial affiliates Mr. Mohamed El Naschie.

The University and its fake scientist's joined efforts proved fantastically fruitful and resulted in achieving the THE's high-ranking which brought Alexandria University from hovering around the 4000 or 5000 mark to the impressive 147.

Now why is THE choosing silence instead of retracting the egregiously obvious unfair ranking, deluding VC's, parents and innocent students?

Anyone cares to answer or comment?

Honest Jim 3 October, 2010

Er, the answer may be in your statement of an investigation into 'possible' fraud. Don't like the rankings myself but don't expect them to be judge and jury.

From #63 University of Notre Dame 3 October, 2010

I think you are making a lot of sense: Harvard scored 98% in citation and Alexandria scored 99.8%.

Does anyone know where to get hold of those fraudulent papers' citations? I mean of that claimed scientist?

Cheers -

Funny research .. Sue THE 3 October, 2010

Yes, go to: http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep/www?rawcmd=find+a+m.naschie&FORMAT;=WWW&SEQUENCE;=
You will see the ridiculous research and don't try to read because it is not serious.

Apparently they are published in an Egyptian publication called: "Chaos Solitons Fractals" founded and run the scientist himself. I found some other sites confirming that he no longer owns the publication and since his forced resignation, NOT a single paper was published by him in any journal ... ever... to date.

I'm still scratching my head. This university shouldn't even be on the map ..let a lone amongst top 200!

More fun 8 October, 2010

The publication of El naschie is not in an Egyptian publication but Chaos Soltion Fractals belongs to Elseiver http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaleditorialboard.cws_home/967/editorialboard

El naschie was the editor in chief for almost twenty years 1991-2008, he published in his journal 376 articles. Elsevier fired him on 2008 after a very big scandal. You can learn more about the stories on

More fun 8 October, 2010

I think the responsible for ranking should interpret and investigate their number. They are not just a machine producing number in a blind manner. I think if they observe one of universities achieving abnormal behavior like Alexandria University ranking at 147, then they have investigate carefully how it was possible.

The same applies to Academic Ranking of World Universities http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp
If you look you will find king saud university (Sudia Arabia ) jumped in just two years about 2000 places in ranking , which is a real miracle.

God bless the reputation of the Times and that of Academic Ranking of World Universities made by Shanghai.

How to understand the fun 9 October, 2010

I think there should some efforts for discussing university ranking like Times Higher Education (THE), Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Rankings) http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010_4.jsp and of World Universities, http://www.webometrics.info/

You will find many university succeeded to manipulate these ranking Alexandria university (Egypt) manipulated THE. King Saud university (Saudia Arabia) manipulated THE, Shanghai Rankings and Webometrics Ranking.

You can easily plot histogram showing the time evolution of ranking through the last past three years. You would discover many achieved miracles, it might be necessary to introduce a logarithmic to encompass all ranges in a single graph.

Alexandria university (Egypt) have made a big leap from 5888 last year to 147 present year on THE ranking

King Saud (saudia Arabia)from position similar to Alexandria university to 247 on THE ranking.

King Saud (saudia Arabia)from position like 4000 (three years ago) to 391 on Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Rankings). It becomes ahead of many old respectable universities in Europe.

If the responsibles for these ranking admit this possibility of producing histogram for ranking time evolution for each university. Then they will easily recognize these cheap miracles.

Give credit to parasites 9 October, 2010

The real surprise is not the expected cheating and manipulation by the unethical backward countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia -they have been nothing but parasites leaching off the technological advances of the hardworking world.

The surprise is that "THE" is encouraging the parasites to claim ownership in the precious real-estate of true academia. The silence and doing-nothing attitude of "THE" is messy and neglectful -at best!

Khaled Al-Rasheid 10 October, 2010

I would like to comment on the remarks by "More Fun". and "How to understand the fun".

Over the last four years, King Saud University, along with others in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, has embarked on a massive program of expansion and development. We have recruited highly qualified researchers and scholars from all over the world, established well endowed research centers and institutes and upgraded undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, especially in engineering, science and medicine. Among other things, we now have one of the largest Academic English programs in the world.

As a result, the quality and quantity of research at KSU has greatly increased. Between 2007 and 2010 the number of papers in ISI journals tripled. This is only the beginning.

It is not surprising that this has produced good results in the rankings. In 2008 KSU was in the 800s in the ARWU, in the top 500 in 2009 and in the top 400 in 2010. This is substantial progress but it is a long way from a jump of 2000 places and ARWU does not rank anything near 4000 universities.

KSU's achievement resulted fro high and rising scores for highly cited researchers, publications and faculty productivity. All of this is in the public domain and can be confirmed very quickly with a few mouse clicks.

If anything, ARWU has underestimated KSU. The University was ranked in the top 200 by Webometrics, the top 250 by QS and now the top 400 by THE.

The position of 247 was in last year's THE-QS rankings (not this year's THE) and KSU was never in a similar position to the University of Alexandria in any sort of ranking.

None of this is miraculous, just hard work, meritocratic policies and support from government and society.

Finally, KSU is itself quite an old and respectable university.

Then simply add a huge amount of funding to employ nine highly cited researchers, like King Saud University, also in Saudi Arabia, which gained instant recognition and a top 400 rank in the ARWU while producing fewer research outputs than 20 Australian universities..."

Some remarks 10 October, 2010

It is interesting to look at history of king saud ranking
Webometrics Ranking http://www.webometrics.info/
(year, Rank)
(2007, 2998), (2008, 380), (2010, 164)
It is clear that thre is a jump by almost two thousand positions in three years.

For Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Rankings)
Just look for the time evolution of king saud university on
http://www.arwu.org/Institution.jsp?param=King%20Saud%20University
and then for one university above and below king saud
http://www.arwu.org/Institution.jsp?param=Kansas%20State%20University

http://www.arwu.org/Institution.jsp?param=Kobe%20University
In 2006 king saud was out of the first 500 and maybe out 1200 unpublished list of Shanghai Rankings then in 2010 gets the rank 391.

Another thing El naschie, the fake scientist, is connected to king saud university. One can find 15 El naschie's papers affiliated with King Saud Univ, King Abdullah Inst Nano & Adv Technol, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
http://apps.isiknowledge.com.login.ezproxy.lib.purdue.edu/summary.do?qid=3&product;=WOS&SID;=1BMgbAIE6C7Cn5OgNK2&search;_mode=Refine

Even worse king saud signed a contract for research and development with El naschie (The fake scientist)

Tariq 10 October, 2010

Some philistines dying of envy are spitting blood just because a University in Alexandria came out as number 147. Alexandria was once upon a time the number 1 in the world of science and knowledge. Nobel laureate Ahmed Zuwail who graduated from University of Alexandria was not even one of the top students. As for Mohamed El Naschie, he is one of the most original thinkers of our time. He mastered science, philosophy, literature and art like very few people. Although he is an engineer, he is self taught in almost everything, including politics. Now I can understand that a man with his charisma and vast knowledge must be the object of envy but what is written here goes beyond that. My comment here will be only about what I found out regarding a major breakthrough in quantum mechanics. This breakthrough was brought about by the work of Prof. Dr. Mohamed El Naschie. I will report it as I found it and please check the rest for yourself.

A major breakthrough in understanding wave collapse. This is the least we can say about this new profound discovery. The most astonishing thing about it is why it was not discovered long ago. In a nutshell the essence of the argument is as follows: A quantum particle may be modeled as a point. However it is not any point. It is a Cantor point. That means it is a fractal point taking out of Laurent Nottale’s or Garnet Ord’s fractal spacetime. Consequently it is a point but much more than a point at the same time. Every Cantor point or fractal point is by virtue of self-similarity a point representation of the entire universe, i.e. the fractal universe upon sufficient magnification. This zooming process, as explained by Nottale, has no end. This is all well known stuff from the theory of fractals. Now comes the crucial point. Since this point is nominally a point we take it to be mathematically the zero set and physically to be a quantum particle. Now the boundary of the zero set is the empty set. The empty set has no element what so ever and is given in the classical theory a dimension minus one. Never mind all these numbers. The important thing is just to keep in mind that a Cantor or a fractal point represents a quantum particle and that the boundary of this quantum particle is the empty set. It comes as no surprise that El Naschie and his E-infinity group propose that the empty set is just the mathematical name for the probability wave function of quantum mechanics. Such a wave function is devoid of energy, matter and momentum to the extent that it mystified all physicists and led Einstein as well as Bohm [sic. Bohr. A Freudian slip for Böhm] to call it a ghost wave. There is even a theory by both men called the guiding wave theory. The guiding wave is nothing but the empty set. So far so good. Here comes the resolution of the wave collapse problem say the group of E-infinity researchers. Any attempt to locate the quantum particle will include interference with its boundary. Since its boundary is the empty set, then any interference will make the empty set non-empty. Consequently the empty set ceases to exist. On the other hand the empty set is our quantum wave function. It follows as a trivial result that when the empty set vanishes because it becomes non-empty, then the wave function also vanishes. The group of E-infinity did not stop at this disarming explanation of the wave collapse. Using the Menger-Urysohn and the Hausdorff dimension of the zero set and the empty set, they are able to make convincing calculations and derive the topology of the spacetime manifold which allowed such physics involving the empty set wave collapse. You can read about that in proceedings of a conference in Shanghai http://www.isnd2010.com and http://www.msel-naschie.com. With a theory like that we are in a much better position to start unifying quantum mechanics with relativity and produce a real theory of quantum gravity. At least there is more hope that way.

Blood Spitting Philistine 11 October, 2010

To Some Remarks. You are out of date. The King Saud University stopped its contract with Dr El Naschie. That is why he is suing Nature journal.

To Tariq. Since El Naschie has mastered literature like very few people perhaps you can ask him to explain his theories. He could not do worse than you.

Jason of the blog "El Naschie Watch" 11 October, 2010

Hello Blood Spitting Philistine, I have a question. The El Naschie camp has said that he's suing because of loss of opportunities resulting from the Nature article. It makes sense that loss of a deal with King Saud University would be mentioned in his suit, but I had not heard that detail before. Can you tell us anything else about the suit and its status?

Jason of the blog "El Naschie Watch" 11 October, 2010

Ah, never mind, it said that in the Sarah Limbrick article.

few clicks 11 October, 2010

According to Khaled Al-Rasheid
KSU's acheivement resulted fro high and rising scores for highly cited researchers, publications and faculty productivity. All of this is in the public domain and can be confirmed very quickly with a few mouse clicks.

If one uses ISI web of knowledge one can find the publication record of AL-RASHEID, KAS as year(number of publications)
2010 (40) , 2009 (22), 2008 (30), 2007(7), 2006 (6), 2005(3), 2003 (3), 2002 (2), 2001(4), 2000(1).

It is clear when jumping occurs. Of course this is far from being a miracle, it is just a result of hard working day and night.

Thanks to reader VE, an Egyptian expatriate, for pointing out the comment thread. He has an inaugural blog post of his own, Times Higher Education ranks Alexandria University the world's #4 in research, which includes his letter to THE. It's superb. Here it is, including the letter:

You'd think because I am Egyptian and wish the best for my country, I should feel happy when I read the surprising news that my University, Alexandria, moved from its ranking number of 5882 last year to #147 worldwide this year. But because I love my country I raised the red flag immediately after I saw the obvious fraud committed by another Egyptian -selfish one though. His name is Mohamed El Naschie who manged in the past decade to conspire with another fake Chinese scientist where both cited one another's papers, which spiked the Alexandria's citation ratio from almost zero to 96% -ahead of Harvard's. The results are: the number 5882 rank climbs to #147 -amazing!

Then if you are from a culture that claims to be the best people God has created to mankind "وكنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس", wouldn't you reject the undeserved credit and give it to those worthy of claiming it? That's not what happened. Alexandria University hastened to self-congratulate and considered the unexpected jackpot a gift from Allah who defeated the Israelis who didn't come close to the top 200!

I sent a letter after letter to the Times and urged them to retract their erroneous ranking but heard nothing back. Below is one of the letter I sent:

You would agree that it is your responsibility to fact-check the information according to which you announce to parents around the world the best educational institutes worthy of receiving their hard-earned money. Yes you did them a great favor by saving them on the laborious research. Yes you did the legwork for them. However, if you fail to verify the veracity of the information collected, you could harm them instead.

Now, I urge you to check the 96% citation reported for Alexandria University and you will find that 99% of them were fraud. Yes, fraud! A man by the name of Mohamed El Nachaei colluded with Alexandria University for the past ten years to achieve that rank you just proclaimed. They started a fake journal, of which Mr. El Nachaei was the chief editor and of course approved his own useless papers which he published with an astounding rate of four per month. Then he contacted his co-conspirer from China to cite the fake papers –a favor that Mr. El Naschie would return of course by citing those of the Chinese counterpart, resulting in fraudulent skyrocketing citation volume. It bypassed those of Harvard, MIT and any other research institute in the world.

All the while, the called El Naschie is a joke in Egypt and in fact, there is a website dedicated to show his scientific irrelevance:
Please visit: http://elnaschiewatch.blogspot.com/2010/02/egyptian-physicists-who-do-real-physics.html

He later was terminated from his journal and the strangest thing is that he has not since published a single paper! Instead, he works as a B writer in a local magazine having nothing to do with science what so ever.

Please view those fake citations yourself at: http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep/www?rawcmd=find+a+m.naschie&FORMAT;=WWW&SEQUENCE;=

Please consider revising your decision and tell parents the truth before many become harmed and victimized by your -so far- innocent error. You owe a moral responsibility to your fellow humans, which would speak volume of your courage in the future -if you accept responsibility and sincerely display your erroneous findings. It's the only way to regain trust before the truth, which is already percolating, is revealed by angry deceived victims.

Thanks,
VE
