This is the sort of thing the Internet should be made of.
I just stumbled across it because of

The Indieweb is great!
#fediverse@mastodon.social: The web used to be a collection of weird, passionate personal blogs built by people who just wanted to share things they loved.
No tracking pixels.
No endless algorithmic rage-bait.
No subscription paywalls for basic human thought.
We can actually build that back. Small web, local communities, open protocols.
Boost if you miss the old internet. ๐โจ
Once again #Youtubeโs AI moderation has gone rogue and banned a a popular #vtuber, removing 6 years worth of content, despite the person in question having no warnings or strikes against their account.
The Moderator bot has summarily dismissed their review request without any human review.
And this is not the first time, nor will it be the last.
It shows the dangers of monopolies, and youtube has it in terms of recorded creator content.
Given that the YT Moderator bot seems to regularly target certain minorities, I am still surprised that these groups have not considered rolling out their own video-on-demand service like Peertube where they can control their own content, but I appreciate the reality is doing that costs money and advertising opportunities are harder, whereas YT will pay you for content through advertising with little effort.
I really wish that there were more Youtube alternatives out there that were โmainstreamโ enough to be able to be viable.
Offering of Pie: Come back, you're forgiven!
On the menu this week: the small web, internet toys, vintage AI, Philip K. Dick on fake realities, ... (https://jlopes.eu/links/2026-10-30/)
WEB. SURFING. PARTY. Saturday Nov 14 Belmont Library Room 2A 1-6pm
The solution to doom scrolling alone on your couch is party surfing together in a library. See you there.

i keep thinking about How you could possibly introduce normal people to the concept of having your own website in the year 2026 and in the end i keep settling on ehhh most people wouldn't have had their own site in the year 2006 anyway. But there are clearly a lot of young 'non-tech'* who do love y2k and #smallweb aesthetics that come with it. it just takes so much more effort than using social media though
*i don't work in tech either, but i'm thinking about likeโeven introducing my writer coworker to something basic like #bearblogโshe's never had to:
1. markup text for formatting
2. use an external image host
3. optimize image size
4. edit css for customization
how would you suggest all that and then be like btw, this doesn't have a built-in comment section or newsletter and your friends can't follow you except by using #RSS for which they have to install another app
and that's the simplest option of the #indieweb! unless i recommend blogspot
Hey there, I made a new post talking about what I think about using AI. It's just my opinion, but you can read the post here: https://merazi.github.io/posts/responsible-use-of-ai/

Kickflip to toggle light/dark mode is not exactly smart, but I do it for fun since itโs not persistent.
I am having a lot of fun with :focus-visible and making :hover actions only happen on devices that need a hover, making mobile much easier and responsive.
Also, use the spacebar to activate my theme checkbox.
Also, in Safari, turn on:

Great New Blogs Added to the Community Page
After someone reached out to me on Mastodon, I realized that I fell behind on updating my Community page. So, I spent a little time getting it updated. Check out all the new Indie Web blogs listed there.

Building a small project has taught me that getting people to use it is often harder than building it. ๐
I'm working on BuyMePizza, a free platform where creators can receive crypto tips directly to their wallets.
I'm curious: how do independent creators here accept support from their audience? Do you use crypto, donation platforms, or something else?
ยซWhere do I publish: HTTP, Gopher or Gemini?ยป
Answering the question is like choosing between a car and a bike; the bike is worse at almost everything, but the experience is personal.
