The procedure in F92 appears to be incomplete and internally inconsistent #5278
The procedure in F92 seems incomplete and, as written, the first two checks appear to contradict each other.
The first bullet reads:
Check if an element which conveys information, structure, or relationships through its semantic markup
This step appears to be incomplete. It could be reworded as either:
Check whether an element conveys information, structure, or relationships through its semantic markup
For each element that conveys information, structure, or relationships through its semantic markup...
However, there is also a more fundamental issue.
The second bullet reads:
Element has the attribute role="presentation".
Applying a presentational role means that the element no longer exposes the semantic information conveyed by its "native markup" (assuming the role is honored - e.g., no tabindex). So, this condition appears to contradict the first one, since if an element has a presentational role, it no longer conveys information, structure, or relationships through its semantic markup. Consequently, the first check is never applicable.
I think the intent is to evaluate whether the "native HTML semantics", before applying the presentational role, convey information, structure, or relationships. If so, assigning a presentational role would constitute the failure. The first step could therefore be reworded along those lines: "Check whether the element's native HTML semantics (without the presentational role) convey information, structure, or relationships." The wording can certainly be improved, but I think the procedure should make this intent explicit.
Finally, the second bullet could be generalized to refer to presentational roles rather than only role=presentation, so that it also includes the equivalent role=none.
